(5) Nevada would benefit from having mold remediation standards based on the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Mold Semediation S520. Extra precautions should be taken when toxic mold is found to be present in buildings that house children under the age of 16 and/or senior citizens.

HOMEOWNER STATEMENTS

Statement 1 :
My wife and I had mold in our home, we are not familiar with mold information.  Although I could feel my chest tighten every time I came into the room,we did not even know that we should have gone to a hotel.  No one told us to move out of here. I am a senior citizen and my wife is a senior citizen and a cancer survivor. We would have liked to have some options like moving out and then charging the builder. This would have been fair because aspergillus mold was found in our home. I tell you we were so dumb.

Sincerely,

Statement 2:
I had mold in my new home in 2004 and the builder remediated it. However, the air was not sampled before or after the mold work was done.

In 2006, I had mold in my kitchen. The builder ripped my cabinets out of the moldy kitchen and stored them in the garage. They bought me new bottom cabinets, but put the same top kitchen cabinets back in my house. -- The air was not sampled prior to remediation and there is no way to know if the top cabinets contain mold other than waiting to see if the mold comes back. The top cabinets were in the garage when the air was sampled after remediation.

I think I should have gotten new cabinets on the top and bottom as a precautionary measure to prevent me from having mold again. Builders should be required to do air samples before and after remediation to see if the mold is airborne and if items need to be permanently removed from the house.
