(3) Currently, homeowners have to put down a 50% deposit when hiring a contractor. This should be changed to a 10% deposit.

HOMEOWNER STATEMENTS

Statement 1:
I was just surfing KVBC and ran across your site. I have been here (LAS) almost 4 years and originally both from CA and a CA contractor for many years. Some of my complaints have to do with the NV Contractors Board (here) are:

1. You cannot email them directly.  Not that it is a big deal to snail mail them, but surely they could go to the next level which is to give people the choice of either form of communicating with them.

2. Contractors are allowed to ask for any amount of money to begin a job, and typically 50% is asked.  Please note that in the state of California they cannot ask for more than 10%.  PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

http://www.cslb.ca.gov/consumers/tentpsfct.asp
If the payment schedule contained in the contract provides for a down payment, it shall not exceed $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price (excluding finance charges), whichever is less (swimming pools: two percent or $200, whichever is less).

Statement 3:

50% is excessive and acts to ensure the contractor can just "walk away" from a job if a better opportunity presents itself.

Statement 4:

I do not agree. The non-payment of work is so high in this industry. People in this industry want service to be paid for by someone else. It should be the contractor's choice to not make as much on someone that is in need, though.

Statement 5:

I do not agree. My daughter is a contractor and many times has not been paid.

Statement 6:

50% is a little high.

Statement 7:

I agree. With the amount of homes that are not of quality, we should not be asked to put so much down, especially when we are not being properly helped with the repair of our homes. Contractors should be held accountable for their product.
